New year, new blog and lots of political activity

Welcome. The year begins with lots of political activity in Austin, the Panhandle and across the state and this blog will try to keep you posted on the latest news and comments on issues important to you and to all Texans.

As always, readers’ comments are welcome no matter how critical because the goal of this blog is to promote a healthy debate and understanding of crucial issues facing West Texas and the rest of the state.

In the Panhandle, for example, as the Globe-News reported today, for the first time in two decades, the region appears to have a contested race for the Texas House of Representatives seat incumbent David Swinford, R-Dumas, will be giving up when his current two-year-term expires a year from now. And statewide, for the first time in 16 years there is a highly competitive gubernatorial race, especially in the March 2 Republican primary when incumbent Rick Perry faces U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Wharton County activist Debra Medina.

The same can be said for the lieutenant governor’s race. Republican incumbent David Dewhurst drew three strong Democratic challengers: former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, Austin deli king Marc Katz and labor organizer Linda Chavez Thompson.

There are other races that will be analyzed more thoroughly before the primaries. And then, there is redistricting, a critical issues for West Texas. This is the year when the House Redistricting Committee, which Republican Delwin Jones of Lubbock chairs, will travel all over the state to hear from the public as to how to handle this hot potato in the 2011 legislative session.

So, stay tuned because there will be much more to come in the days, weeks and months ahead.
